Indea’s photography explores and celebrates the fat body and I just adore their work! In this interview they talk about their own experiences with depression, body image and sexual shame and how they would like more body representation in the porn industry. At the end are a few extra photos that were not shown on Instagram that Indea let me share here. Read on to find out more...
Tell us about yourself & your practice?
Hi, my name's Indea (she/they)! I'm a queer, non-binary sworker. I create adult content on OFans, as well as nude self-portraits (none of which I can share on Instagram!). My work serves as a reminder that living in a fat body can be a joyful experience. I love creating p*rn that showcases real pleasure and what it looks like to truly love your flesh and experience freedom from body shame. On Instagram, I support people in healing from their body shame by sharing my own experiences of healing from eating disorders, diet culture, body hatred and sexual shame.
What inspires your art form?
I am perpetually inspired by nature but my own body has become my greatest muse.
What got you into creating forms of art that explore and celebrate body acceptance / self-love / body neutrality / fat acceptance?
Almost 3 years ago, I started a 365 self-portrait project, mostly to distract myself from the severe depression I was suffering. I only made it through 2 months of the project but I discovered the beauty in the shapes of my own body. Seeing my body as art helped me to recover from an eating disorder and let go of the sexual shame I was carrying around after childhood sexual abuse. This eventually led me down my fairly new path as a shame free kinky sworker. Sharing my nude body publicly was a massive and scary step for me but it helped me to connect with others and was so worth it!
What would you like to tell the person reading this about body acceptance / body neutrality / fat acceptance?
I would like to tell you that although outside representation and seeing fat people living joyfully in their own bodies is so important, your biggest growth is going to come from finding ways to represent and honour yourself and your own individual body journey. Whilst work like my own may be a catalyst, it's your own hard work to follow through with it and don't be disheartened if you don't see changes right away - it takes a little patience and practice to break down years worth of self-depreciating behaviours.
What would you like to see in the future regarding the body acceptance movement?
I would like to see less performance and more people taking responsibility for their own change; realising that body acceptance is not just about your body - it is an all encompassing healing journey (and most of it does not happen on social media). I would also love to see the body acceptance movement extended to p*rn and to see more fat sworkers succeeding! The adult industry, like the whole of our society, perpetuates airbrushing and it's so disheartening to see people overusing filters and removing stretchmarks etc. I would like to see more feminists including sworkers in their fight and, more than that, I would love to see fellow sworkers creating shame free spaces for pleasure to exist, as body shame is usually strongly tied to sexual shame.
Thank you so much Indea for sharing with us your thoughts and experiences with body acceptance in this insightful and amazing interview.
